Elegant Mo'o Haloa By Nelson Makua Gift Ready [rETM3PKm]

Nelson Makua has been an artist and designer on the Big Island for over 35 years. He is a two-time Na Hoku Hanohano award winner for graphic design and is the only artist to have created six years of Merrie Monarch Hula Festival posters.

From the genealogy of Hāloa, comes forth Hawaiians forever.

For Hawaiians, kalo is not only a source of food, it is also what bonds them to their culture and beliefs about the creation of man.  According to the Kumulipo, the creation chant, the union of Wakea (sky father) and Papa (earth mother), created the Hawaiian islands.

Together they had a daughter, Ho'ohokulani.  Through Wakea's relationship with he daughter, Ho'ohokulani, they had a son who was still born who they named Hāloanaka.  His lifeless body was buried and from him, sprouted the first kalo.

They then had another son, healthy and strong, who they also named Hāloa.  The youger Hāloa would respect and care for his elder brother and in return, his older brother would provide him sustenance and nourishment, and so the kalo grew abundantly.   This younger son Hāloa, became the first human to live in the islands, and from him, all Hawaiian people are descended.

The story of Hāloa and kalo is the new image for 2011 as part of our Hawaiian Legacy series.
