Husband-wife craftsmen Patrick and Peggy Bookey create this stunning Koa bowl with pierced designs. This Koa bowls is a hand-crafted work of art. Patrick starts with a solid chunk of Koa from dead or previously fallen trees on the Big Island. He then dries the wood to 8% humidity before lathe-turning it into a bowl of a very thin consistent thickness. Then Peggy takes over and begins the intricate painstaking process of cutting out minute pieces from the bowl to form a lace-like pattern with Hawaiian images. Some bowls show sea creatures such as whales or honu sea turtles. Other bowls show Hawaiian flowers like hibiscus and plumeria.
