Frame size: 14 x 16 1/8 in.
Callot was the first important etcher who was not a painter. He developed a new sort of etching needle called the choppe, which had a sharp but rounded end. He used this tool on a hard etching surface, forcing the acid to bite a much sharper line than it would on a more conventional etching ground. This etching is the fourth state of an eventual five, and is traditionally said to depict St. Amond. However, it has variously been said to depict St. Nicholas or St. Séverin.
