Indicative of the Wabi Sabi aesthetic, this Moon Jar was crafted during a contemplative process, during which Anzai employs a slow craftmaking rhythm. His deliberate approach is dictated by the process of making – firstly carefully layering porcelain, then continuously sandpapering, polishing, and, finally, refining. The soft shape of the vessel embodies the tranquillity that emits from Anzai’s works, while the deep earthy tones embody strength. The subtle dialogue between the delicate shapes and rich tones evokes a serene energy, that invites the viewer for a meditative glance, that focuses on intricate details. By infusing glaze with urushi, a traditional Japanese lacquer derived from the sap of a lacquer tree, Anzai used his perfected skills in ceramics to create an exceptional piece, that is the epitome of perfect balance.

About the Artist

Kenta Anzai is an internationally acclaimed ceramic artist. Being an apprentice to Tatsuzo Shimaoka, a renowned ceramicist and Living National Treasure, makes Anzai a part of an outstanding lineage of Japanese artisans and a master of his craft. By approaching his process of making through a meditative manner and often taking months to complete one piece, Anzai’s artworks are a true embodiment of craftsmanship. His carefully sculpted ceramic vessels, informed by the notion of simplicity, are each unique in their detailed surface pattern, yet all are marked by Anzai’s perfected style that emits serenity and power.
