The Allegro 2041 Bitrex Kit offers qualitative OSHA-compliant fit testing for disposable and reusable dust and mist respirators rated N95 and higher. Before donning the mask for use on the job, the sensitivity solution is used to establish that the subject can smell and recognize the solution. The Bitrex solution creates an unmistakable bitter taste that indicates a leak in the respirator fit. The actual fit test solution is more concentrated and stronger in smell. Some people feel that Bitrex is somewhat safer than saccharin tests because, while producing identical results, the Bitrex taste is harder for subjects to ignore than saccharin taste. This may result in better overall results. The solution is contained in disposable glass ampules that make pouring solution into the nebulizers easier and reduces the chance of contamination. Each glass ampule is enough for approximately 3-5 tests.
