Weavers in China diligently hand-knotted the rug c. 1930's. Around that time, American entrepreneur and designer Walter Nichols invested in Chinese carpet workshops, and popularized the now-famous art deco floor textiles. This rug's age, colors, materials, weaving techniques, and overall style closely resemble the Nichols pieces.

In terms of condition, the design and colors show beautifully. The wool pile is remarkably supple, lustrous and thick. Only a small handful of white cotton foundation dots are showing, far fewer than most antique deco rugs. We repaired one selvage (long edge) of the rug, which was coming unraveled. The rug has one small, hard-to-see stain, a bit larger than a quarter, at one end. The same end shows a bit of very light, limited pile damage.
