He left the show to star as Charles Ingalls on the sensitive, spiritually uplifting "Little House on the Prairie" (1974-1983), further cementing his fatherly, saintly image, which came to full fruition with the frankly religious "Highway to Heaven" (1984-1989). The beloved star died tragically of liver and pancreatic cancer at the age of 54 and authentic examples of his heavily-forged signature are highly difficult to come by.
