Exceptionally rare vintage 3.5 x 5.5-inch matte-finish silver-tone portrait, boldly signed in black fountain pen in Austria in May of 1915-- just the second example we have ever seen offered anywhere on the market. In very fine condition. Highly controversial Austrian novelist and playwright Arthur Schnitzler explored themes of sexuality, and lambasted the dubious moral sensibilities of upper- and middle-class Hapsburg society. His most famous play "Regen" was famously filmed by Max Ophuls as La Ronde in 1950, and has inspired a number of other screen and stage derivations. His 1926 novella Traumnovelle was the basis for Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut (1999). About a decade after his death, his entire ouvre was denounced as "Jewish filth", and banned and burned by the Nazis.
