They easily snap onto the ankles and the only way to free the cuffs is by using the special provided key.  The part of the cuff that goes across the arch of the foot makes it so that the wearer has to keep their toe pointed, forcing them to wear heels.  The cuffs are far more comfortable than regular metal cuffs because they provide a much wider surface area where they contact the ankle.
