The mighty U-48, built in Kiel in 1938 and 1939, was the most successful German U-boat of World War II.

In two years of active service she sank 55 ships (321,000 tons) and damaged two more. By 1941, as the nature of naval warfare changed and expanded, her range and torpedo capacity were limited. She was then used as a training vessel which then lay in Neustadt for two years and was finally sunk by her maintenance crew in early 1945.
