How to Grow Scarlet Frill Mustard

Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. It's best to seed early in the spring season indoors, and plant seedlings after last frost, or plant late in the season for a fall harvest. Scarlet frill mustard does not do well in high temperatures. Very often this is grown completely indoors, and harvested as a microgreen or as baby greens, for a lighter texture. Whether planting indoors or in the garden, water at ground level and avoid getting the greens wet to avoid disease. Fertilize as needed.

Harvesting Scarlet Frill Mustard

Scarlet frill mustard is full grown at about 50 days, but it's common to harvest early for baby greens at 20 to 25 days, or as early as 14 days for microgreens.

At full growth, scarlet frill is 8-12" tall. Cut the larger leaves, and leave the main stem to allow for continuous harvest.

Culinary Tips

Used in salads, scarlet frill mustard can add a colorful, spicy addition to any salad. These can be used in any dark greens recipe, if a somewhat less spicy flavor is desired, it's a good idea to sauté the leaves for a few minutes before adding to the other ingredients. These can be stir-fried or roasted, and they make a special rich and spicy addition to many dishes!
