Based on the Japanese concept of “MA,” Gunji uses a unique concept called "In-between" in his work. Crucial to his “Collectivity” series, “In-between” is his rule of finding hints for his work in the space between something — especially in the space between dichotomies. The purpose of his journey as an artist is to metaphorically capture the unspecified, subtle, and unspoken sensations and feelings he receives between himself and something else and put them into a tangible work of art. Usually, collage is a remix of the self and the environment, reconstructing printed matter, photographs, and other objects that are distant from the self, but Gunji sees the environment through his own filter, such as the surface of shining water or trees catching the wind, and draws them on paper and uses them as textures and patterns to create scenes that move the artist between the self and the environment.
