The B-52 first flew on April 15th, 1952 - over 67 years ago! In 2013, Air Force Capt. David Welsh was the third generation to fly the B-52; his father, retired Lt. Col. Don Welch, was trained to drop nuclear bombs from the B-52 during the Cold War, and his grandfather, retired Col. Don Sprague, flew B-52 combat missions in Vietnam.
This particular design is based upon B-52 Serial 59-2584 which was stationed at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam during the Vietnam War and participated in the first wave of Operation Linebacker II in December 1972. It served with the Strategic Air Command until it was placed on long-term loan to The Museum of Flight in 1991 where it is currently on display.
