Each rugged gaiwan is made of rough dark clay, feeling grainy in the hand. The surface of the clay moves between metallic dark brown and vitrified gray as a result of an interaction with flame, soda and ash during a few days straight of woodfiring. It is also stunning with faint cracks spread on the grey, providing an significant esthetic enhancement.
