This figurine, the Herend Elk was designed by sculptor Janos Toth and introduced in 1957. A very popular figurine in its original natural coloration, it is now available for the first time in a shaded brown fishnet style. The elk figurine appears to be engaging in a behavior known as "bugling" which happens during the mating season (also known as the rut). Bugling is a very distinctive vocalization which begins deep and resonant and then becomes a high pitched squeal before ending in a succession of grunts. Similar to a preening peacock, this bugling serves to attract females during the very competitive mating season.
