The subtlety of pattern and mending in this indigo dyed cotton futon is beautiful to behold--and it takes a bit of time and thoughtfulness to full appreciate these delicate details.
The base cloth is, overall, a regulated and attractive plaid pattern. However if you look closely you will see variations to this plaid which is the result of using leftover, randomly-sourced yarns to the mix. Detail photos here show this aspect.
What is so compelling about this nuanced-in-effect, full futon cover is the large, oval patch which uses the same cloth as the base, making for an intriguing detail on the whole.
Add to this, look below this oval and you will see a block of weaving done in a slightly different color than the rest; the visual dialogue between the mended oval and the square-ish passage of differently colored cloth is artful sleight of hand.
So much more can be said about this piece but it is in the study of it and in taking time with it that you will come to appreciate the layers of visual information that this humble cloth so generously bestows.
