This is an oval-shaped, piece constructed drawstring bag which is hand stitched from fragments of indigo dyed kasuri cotton. The bag is lined and is lightly padded with cotton wadding.
Its original purpose was to contain a hot water "bottle" called a yutanpo which was mainly used to warm up a futon on a cold night.
That said, the bag still has many different uses and its shape lends itself easily to them.
The back of the bag shows wear and the cloth has given way so the thin layer of cotton batting can be seen.
Obviously this yutanpo cover was used often and well over many years and with it we feel the warmth it generated for whoever was the person who once owned it.
Delightful.
