This charming, very sashiko stitched, rectangular shaped textile is a diaper.  It is stitched together of about three layers of hand spun, hand woven cotton that is dyed in a pale tint of indigo, known in Japan as asagi iro.

The hand spun cotton base is covered in tight, irregularly spaced rows of white cotton sashiko stitches with the exception of the two sides and row up the center which are stitched with a dark blue cotton thread.

A deep blue cotton patch is applied to both sides and two ties dangle from the top two corners.

Really delightful, this is a small, rustic treasure from old Japan.
