DATE: Edwardian, c.1910
Cool antique slot machine pendant with functioning handle and fruit scrolls, just like the real thing. Stamped with sterling on the bottom with scroll patterns on each side of the machine and fruit symbols, circa 1910.
The slot machine is also known as a fruit machine or the one armed bandit, as they are widely known to 'steal' your money after pulling the handle or lever to activate the the reels. This particular slot machine shows similarities to the 'Operator Bell' or 'Liberty Bell' created by Charles Fey in approximately 1910, weighing at a big 100lbs.
It's most new and distinctive features included fruit instead of spades, hearts etc.
These machines became very popular throughout American society but also grabbed the attention of Society for the Suppression of Vice, which was against the concept of gambling, however, Charles Fey remarkably named his creation to symbolize the American values of freedom of trade or fair business practice.
