Hyalite is a transparent form of opal with a glassy luster. Hyalite opal gets its name from the Greek word hialos, which means “glass.” The Greek word opallios inspires the second part of the name, opal, and means “precious stone.”

German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner, the first geologist who came across hyalite opal in the late 1700s, used these Greek words to name the opal.
