Original Second Empire French Legion of Honor Knight’s Cross, Chevalier Grade.

During the Second French Empire (1852-1870), the Légion d'Honneur was France's highest order of merit, established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte. It recognized both military and civil achievements, being awarded to individuals for outstanding service to France, regardless of nationality. The Legion of Honor continued to be awarded throughout the Second Empire, acknowledging significant contributions to French society and military service. This model would’ve been awarded during the Crimean War up to the Franco-Prussian War.

Crafted from 800 silver, this French Légion D’honneur Knight’s Cross features white, blue, and green enamels with ball finials on each of the arms. The obverse center showcases a profile of Luis Napoleon facing right, surrounded by an inscription in a blue enamel ring that reads “NAPOLEON EMPEREUR DES FRANCAIS”. The reverse centerpiece displays an eagle surrounded by a blue enamel ring with the inscription “HONNEUR ET PATRIE”. Measuring 40.7mm (w) x 61.8mm (h - inclusive of crown suspension) and weighing 21.47 grams (including red period ribbon), this cross bears a boars head mark on the 6 o’clock ribbon tassels denoting its made of Silver and manufactured in Paris. Although there are notable enamel chips on both the obverse and reverse, as well as a dark patina and discoloration on the ribbon, this medal remains in quality condition.
