This 6'0' hull is a beauty. The top and bottom are unique, creating two art pieces for conversation in the wave line up and/or the home.
A hull surfboard has a convex bottom shape and planing surface. A traditional displacement board plows through and parts the water, but a planing hull is different. It skims across the surface creating a fast and loose ride.
The primary wood on the stunning top deck is Alaskan yellow cedar from old benches at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. There are wedge lines of redwood from the historic Schwan Mansion in Santa Cruz and from MMA fighter Gray Maynard's house in Capitola, California. The Schwan wood was milled in the 1890s and is at least one thousand0 years old. It was used as floorboards for over one hundred0 years. There is also inlaid wood of cocobolo, spruce and Indian rosewood from Santa Cruz Guitar Company offcuts. This legendary company has been making exceptional guitars for the likes of Johnny Cash, Ben Harper, Elvis Costello,
Eric Clapton, Jimmy Buffet, and hundreds of others since 1976.
The bottom deck incorporates the same woods as the top deck and is laid out in a different and complimentary design.
The fin is made from cocobolo and rosewood from the Santa Cruz Guitar Company. It also incorporates redwood reclaimed from John Steinbeck's house in Pacific Grove, California. Woodworker René Gaudette, Monterey Bay Aquarium Teen Conservation Leader volunteer and employee of Houston's Home Improvement & Repair, was inspired by Ventana's sustainable product development approach. René has been working on the restoration of John Steinbeck's cottage house and generously provided us with redwood boards removed from the foundation and the bathroom of the home. The cottage was originally owned by Steinbeck's father and was John's residence beginning in 1928 when he and his wife, Carol, returned to the area. John published his first novel, Cup of Gold, the following year. That novel, along with others, was written in the house.
The rails are made of oak cork, and it was glassed with Entropy Super Sap 100 Bio Resin made with mostly tree sap and 4oz. fiberglass cloth (two layers on top and one on bottom). As with all Ventana boards, the interior is glassed and sealed, as well.
Made in Santa Cruz, California by master craftsman Martijn Stiphout.
