This one-of-a-kind sushi board was created by Paul Jasper of Copper Pig Woodworking in Framingham, Massachusetts using Ventana fish scales created by our master craftsman, Martijn Stiphout, using woods from our Upcycle Partner Program. The scales match the Barred Surfperch 5'10", Ventana's 100th surfboard. They are crafted from maple, bay laurel, cocobolo, walnut, and Indian rosewood sourced from Santa Cruz Guitar Company production offcuts. The fish scales start flat, fully inlaid, and gently creep up proud of the surface as their colors graduate from light to dark.
This pieces is collaboration with the wonderfully talented potter, Fabienne Synnott of Quebec City. Fabienne hand made a beautiful, dark-flecked soy sauce dish with organic rim, even glazing the inside of the foot with a light blue surprise. The top of the sushi board is bay laurel from floorboards salvaged from the historic cooperage building on the University of California, Santa Cruz campus where barrels were made for lime used during the California Gold Rush. There is also brass inlay framing the soy dish and on the custom, wenge chopsticks. The back is slightly ebonized black walnut with round Asian-style feet. It is finished with pure tung oil and shellac and is food-safe.
