I only use gold plated items in my earrings which keeps the cost down and because it doesn't touch your skin, the gold plating doesn't wear off nearly as easily.  All of my earwires are made using 14k gold fill (4-5 layers of bonded gold which lasts a lifetime under normal wear) or sterling silver, which should eliminate most alergic reaction issues.

I make all the jewerly myself! I usually start with sterling silver sheet and sterling silver wire (or Gold filled ) and forge it with hammers, saws, stamps, 
hydraulic press, etc.  and all most always, there is a silversmithing torch involved. I use genuine stones, unless noted and mainly sterling silver, but also love other metals like gold filled, gold bronze and I especially love pure gold when price isn't an issue for my customer.  Sometimes I even play with brass or german silver when requested.  I absolutely love making jewelry and am so happy I get to do this for a living.
