The Zephyrette, a tri-weekly train operated by the Western Pacific Railroad between Oakland, California and Salt Lake City, ran from 1950 to 1960. This 924-mile (1487 km) long route was the longest RDC service in the United States and replaced the Royal Gorge as a secondary supplement to the California Zephyr. The train began service on September 15, 1950, following the regulations of regulatory agencies and used modified Budd Rail Diesel Cars (RDCs) for cost and operational advantages. Despite its initial success, the train ultimately proved to be unprofitable and was discontinued by the Western Pacific on October 2, 1960.
