An original scrapbook of programs, clippings and autographs related to the brilliant pianist Julius Katchen, compiled by Katchen's grandmother in the 1930's to 1940's. Highlights of the scrapbook include a copy of the 1937-1938 season Journal of The Philadelphia Orchestra signed "To Ma, My Grandma & Teacher with Love & Appreciation, Julius Katchen"; a concert program from the Philharmonic-Symphony Pension Fund Concert at Carnegie Hall on November 22, 1937, signed by Brazilian soprano Bidu Sayao and also inscribed by Katchen to his grandmother; and a 5-page repertoire list, probably compiled by Katchen's grandmother. Approx. 22 pages in total. Most pages detached from the binding.

The American pianist Julius Katchen, best-known for his recordings of Brahms' solo piano works, had his early training with his maternal grandparents, immigrants who had taught at the conservatories of Warsaw and Moscow. At age 10, he performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Eugene Ormandy; at age 12, he made his New York recital debut at Town Hall. After attending Haverford College, he represented the United States at the first International UNESCO Festival, and then moved permanently to Paris. He died of cancer at the age of 42. This remarkable book undoubtedly contains some of his earliest recorded signatures.
