A superb copy of this fascinating study of the music of everyday Parisian life, the sounds of the city. Kastner collected 642 different cries of the trades-people of the streets of Paris and of other European cities and classifies them here by place, time, and occupatin of the crier. Following these classifications, he has composed an elaborate score "Symphonie Humoristique: Les Cris de Paris," for full orchestra and chorus, divided into three sections: Le Matin, Le Jour, Le Soir.



Kastner was a prolific composer and writer on music. He left a wide variety of compositions, including some of the earliest works composed for the innovations of Adolphe Sax. His Traite General d'Instrumentation (1837) was an important influence for Berlioz, who later gave Kastner the autograph manuscript of Romeo et Juliette (Grove). The present volume is one of his nine livres-partition, lengthy essays followed by music.
