First edition was published in September 2002, this was reprinted in the month of actual invasion of Iraq and would have been carried by pilots in the opening weeks of the Second Gulf War. Produced by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (originally called the National Imagery and Mapping Agency), the map covers parts of Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

This waterproof map could also be used as a shelter from the sun or rain. The map’s border is of particular interest, where environmental hazards are illustrated along with flora and fauna plus navigational aids: the things the army intelligence expected soldiers to encounter. Indeed, “this chart is intended for survival situations. Refer to current editions of appropriate aeronautical charts for flight planning or operations. Not to be used for targeting”.
