One of the most influential sources of information about King Philip’s War, first published in 1677 as A Narrative of the Troubles with the Indians in New-England. Born in England in 1621, Hubbard was a member of Harvard University’s first graduating class, and became pastor of the Ipswich church. His narrative of the conflicts between the Massachusetts Bay Colonists and the Indigenous Nations of New England was written in response to some extent in response to Increase Mather’s Brief History of the War with the Indians (1676), which framed the conflict in terms of divine retribution. Hubbard’s account, on the other hand, blamed the conflict on a lack of religion amongst the Indians.
