Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice early example of a German WWII Feldgendarmerie Verkehrs-Aufsicht Ärmelbinde (Military Field Police Traffic Control Armband), the first example that we have ever been able to offer! This armband is made of bright orange cotton fabric with a smooth feel, and is machine embroidered in black with Verkehrs-Aufsicht in "Roman" lettering. Later examples were printed instead of embroidered, and then switched to the "Latin" style sans serif font. The long edges of this armband have been finished with straight yellow machine stitching. It measures approximately 14 1/2" x 4 1/8", an is sewn together in the back with a "French" seam.

The armband is in excellent condition, showing just a bit of wear, with the main issue being wrinkling from storage and age. We can see just a bit of light staining, as well as some dust and plant fibers from storage. A lovely example with great eye appeal!

The “Feldgendarmerie”, (Military Field Police), units were established on mobilization of the army in 1939 and drew the majority of its personnel from the civil Ordnungspolizei, (Order Police), as they were already familiar with policing regulations and tasks. As an expedient measure the Feldgendarmerie personnel originally wore police uniforms with army insignia added but by late 1939 or early 1940 they were issued army uniforms with distinct identifying insignia including a duty Gorget, a police sleeve badge and a cufftitle for wear by all ranks.

On October 26TH 1939 the Verkehrsregelungs-Bataillonen, (Traffic Regulations Battalions), were constituted as a sub-branch of the Feldgendarmerie and were tasked with all military traffic control. When performing traffic control duties the Verkehrsregelungs-Bataillonen personnel were issued with a distinguishing armband that was to be returned to the authorizing authority on conclusion of the traffic duties.

Of Note: The Verkehrsregelungs-Bataillonen were reorganized in 1942 as Feldgendarmerie-Abteilungen, (Military Police Battalions), but remained responsible for traffic controlling duties and continued to utilize the identifying armband as required.
