Premium Select Handmade Afghan Mamluk Carpet - Enr308330 Online Exclusive [yVweacBj]
You can buy this handmade piece before it arrives in our Tewkesbury showroom. As the rug has not yet been received into our stock, it has yet to be properly photographed; the images are perhaps not as good as our normal images. Once the rug has been transferred from our warehouse, we will rephotograph it.
It's certainly not unusual to find these beautiful Afghan Mamluk rugs and carpets featuring this stunning design. However, what's more uncommon about this rug is its size. The rug has a slightly squarer proportion, being 9'6 x 7'10. Even so, the design is outstanding. With its green-blue background contrasted with the bold brick red and cream border, this carpet will surely garner somebody's attention!

Mamluk's designs are simply stunning. They often revolve around large medallions with intersecting compartments, which is becoming more common in modern Oriental carpets and rugs.
The history of these ancient Egyptian carpet designs could be traced to the 'Mamluk Dynasty' around 1250; these Turkic descendants established a thriving carpet industry in Cairo in the 15th century. In recent years, many Afghan weavers have been interested in old designs like Mamluk, which they interpret, paying particular attention to the new colours that would not have been traditionally used. As you may expect, these pieces are handmade, often using traditional vegetables dyed on cotton foundations. The final finishing process, such as surface clipping and herbal washing, is generally undertaken in Pakistan. The Afghan Mamluk carpets at Jennings Rugs are amongst the most prized pieces, with a level of detail that often surpasses Oriental carpet rugs produced elsewhere. The fine weave and beautiful wool make these pieces very desirable.
