These classic old Persian Gabbeh rugs are little treasures of rustic simplicity. However, the hand-knotted wool they are made with has such substance, character, and even some of the spirit of the women that make them. The rugs have been made using the same methods by nomadic tribes for centuries. The women sit and spin the long-ply wool by hand and dye it using natural products around them, such as walnut husks, pomegranate rind, tree bark, wildflowers and berries. The design is often very abstract, with open fields of colour and sometimes an element of fun. These pieces are very different from the modern-day Gabbeh rugs. They may be between 20/30 years old and with no sign of wear in terms of age. They are often used in their tents by the people who make them. There are many different Gabbeh rugs, but there is something very genuine and traditional about these works of art.
