This fine Afghan Kazak carpet has been handmade by skilled artisan weavers in a cottage industry in the northwest region of Afghanistan. These traditional skills have been passed down from one generation to the next so that we can continue to enjoy these works of art. The methods used are just the same, using handspun vegetable-dyed wool and going through all the processes to ensure each piece is finished to the highest quality.

Although Kazaks are hand-knotted in Afghanistan, the design originates from the Caucasus. The short pile emphasises the sharpness of the pattern. Each piece is made using excellent Afghan wool, usually spun in Ghazni. Afghan wool is generally slightly coarser and curlier than other wools and is perfect for carpet weaving. Afghan Kazak carpets are traditionally made with bold geometric designs in intense, vibrant colours such as rich reds, warm terracottas, and shades of blues with soft golds and creams.

In Pakistan, the final carpet stage involves many processes. Initial tensioning and alignment problems may be addressed, followed by surface clipping, herbal washing, and tumbling. This combination of Afghan weaving and finishing has succeeded.
