Carcassonne is a tile-placement game where players draw and place a tile featuring a piece of southern French landscape. The tile might feature a city, a road, a cloister, grassland, or some combination thereof, and it must be placed adjacent to tiles that have already been played. Cities connect to cities, roads to roads, and so on. After placing a tile, players can place a meeple on it: as a knight on the city, a robber on the road, a monk on the cloister, or a farmer on the grass. When that area is complete, the meeple scores points for its owner.

During a game of Carcassonne, players must make decisions such as, "Is it worth placing my last meeple here?" or "Should I expand my city or place this tile near my opponent to disrupt their progress?"
