This is an original 1933 color print of the garden of Mr. John Edward Aldred on his estate in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York. The caption writes, "Formal gardens are expensive to start, hard to keep up. Like ladies in evening dress, they must be beautifully neat. A one-acre formal garden may cost from $30,000 to $40,000 for landscaping and statuary. A head gardener gets $2,000 up, undergardeners (usually one for each type of garden) $1,200, day laborers $3.50 a day."

Aldred was the chairman for Consolidated Gas and was also a chairman for the Gillette Safety Razor Company.
