This is an original 1876 black and white steel engraving that depicts William Russell (Lord Russell), a prominent 17th century English politician who was known for taking a hard line against the monarchy. He belonged to the Country Party, a conglomerate of Tories and Whigs who professed to have the nation's best interest in heart. Apparently, having James II succeed Charles II was not part of that interest, as the Country Party were among those in support of his eventual arrest for treason and beheading in 1701. However, Russell saw his demise before James did, as the government found out about his involvement in the Rye House Plot to ambush James and Charles and they were not happy. He died in 1683, beheaded for treason.
