In 1883, mint officials changed the design of the Five-Cents Nickel. Some people were impressed with the design, however due to negligence of the mint, the word "CENTS" was forgotten to be put anywhere on the coin, just a large Roman numeral "V". This caused some no-good-doers to take advantage of the coin, by gold plating them and passing them off as $5 gold pieces! The correction was made immediately after, adding "CENTS" back on the coin. This is a highly sought coin for rare coin collectors alike!
